Have to say though that I'm not liking my chances so much now, looks like the outcome is going to be that I have to buy a new laptop.

Latest situation on the laptop is that the
repair was done,
and it was working fine, but when the repair guy powered it on the next day
it was back to how it was at the outset. Further investigations are being
done and I should have an update on Tuesday.
