Smartphone for Linux? N900 = nirvana possibly…

by James Ogley on October 5th, 2009

I’ve been on a quest, a quest to determine what might be the best smartphone for Linux users. I was disappointed by what I discovered and ended up with the shameful and ironic view that in terms of functionality, the best option is to go for a phone running Windows Mobile.

Since then, I’ve looked more and more at the Nokia N900 which is a gorgeous-looking piece of equipment and runs the equally lovely in appearance Maemo5.

Note: What follows now is conjecture. I have not had my hands on an N900 and until I do, I cannot test anything.

The addressbook and calendar applications in Maemo5 use evolution-data-server as their backend and The Funky Penguin pointed out to me that this should mean that using Conduit should work for synchronising across the network. Conduit is available for Maemo (albeit currently previous releases) through the Garage. This gave me hope. Could it be that the N in N900 does indeed stand for Nirvana?

Meanwhile, my quest has been cited in a recent article on Free Software Magazine.
