It’s been a busy week for the NME‘s Stone Roses correspondent. First, they were reforming then, Mani pointed out what utter [bleep] this report was. Oh yes, the scotching of the first report was reported twice, just to be clear.
Meanwhile, the Roses topped the Manic Street Preachers‘ list of bands they’d like to see reform (posted on Twitter).
With all that in mind, I’ve been listening back to Second Coming. It struck me as I did what a truly great rock album it is. There’s barely a thing wrong with it and it still sounds as good now as it did in 1994 when it was released (I bought it on release day).
The thing is that it’s a very under-rated album and this is a testimony to the sheer significance and quality of their debut, eponymous album. Both the NME and the Observer Music Monthly have named it the best British album of all time and it’s impossible for me to disagree. Had Second Coming been recorded by any other band, it would be recognised for the masterpiece that it is. Having to stand alongside The Stone Roses is impossible.
So dust off your copy and take another listen. If you don’t own it, you can download the whole album for £3.99 from Amazon.
Then listen again to the first album of course. Still the best album ever recorded.

As much as I like the Stone Roses, there are plenty of other great classic British albums that are better. Led Zepplin’s first album, 4th album and Physical Graffiti, The Who’s Who’s Next, several Rolling Stones albums, at least 3 Pink Floyd albums, The Kinks We are the Village Green Preservation Society, two or three Fleetwood Mac albums. I could go on but you get the idea
I love 2nd Coming though. Ten Storey Love Song in particular.
